Ruth Reichl is a commanding and daunting figure in American culture. Beginning in the 1970s, she played a key role in revolutionizing food and restaurant journalism, wielded make-or-break influence as a restaurant critic for the Los Angeles Times and later the New York Times, and continues to loom large as editor in chief of Gourmet magazine.

With her fourth book, "Not Becoming My Mother: And Other Things She Taught Me Along the Way," however, Reichl looks backward and inward in an attempt to understand and explain her mother, both to herself and to us.

At barely 100 pages, "Not Becoming My Mother" is a meditation rather than a memoir but is no less affecting for its brevity. Reichl is performing in public what is, after all, a rite of passage: the contemplation of a deceased parent. In that sense, her little book is an exploration of one of life's biggest mysteries.

Ruth Reichl has reviewed restaurants for The New York Times, dragged Gourmet magazine into the 21st century and written two page-turning memoirs about life, love and food. So what are we to make of her latest book, more amuse-bouche than soul-baring autobiography?

"Not Becoming My Mother: And Other Things She Taught Me Along the Way" clocks in at 112 pages, not much longer than a Junior League cookbook. Its subject: Reichl's mother, Miriam Brudno, whose diaries Reichl unearthed after her death. On the anniversary of what would have been her mother's 100th birthday, Reichl tries to reconcile the crazy, difficult woman who raised her with the author of the diaries -- an accomplished woman who spent much of her life fruitlessly searching for a career.

Miriam wanted to become a doctor but her parents were obsessed with her finding a husband. She opened a bookstore at 20, had a brief, unhappy marriage that produced a son, and then met the love of her life -- Ernst Reichl, Ruth's father -- and opened a publishing business with him during World War II. Miriam, who called herself "Mim" for short, corresponded with Bertrand Russell and Max Eastman. But when the publishing business failed and the war ended, she found herself like thousands of women of her time -- bored and unhappy. She spent the rest of her life searching restlessly for something to engage her mind.
