The spiritual journey of the apostles: growth in the gospel of mark - The Spiritual Journey: A Shift and Awakening to a Greater.

It’s said that Robert Hugh Benson’s conversion to Roman Catholicism was an act of rebellion against his father, Edward White Benson, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 until his death in 1896. Whether it was or wasn’t, the younger Benson’s spiritual autobiography at least offers grounds for seeing his conversion in that light.

But if so, what difference does it make? God can use inclinations and fears we may prefer not to recognize in ourselves as portals for grace to enter our lives. If latent conflict with a formidable father played a part in this son’s decision to become a Catholic, it doesn’t follow that the conversion was any less sincere.

Robert Hugh Benson (1871-1914) was a prolific author of fiction, apologetics and devotional works, best remembered for the apocalyptic novel Lord of the World , which Pope Francis calls one of his favorite books . His spiritual autobiography, Confessions of a Convert , first published in 1912 and republished by Ave Maria Press, ranks among his best. It’s no exaggeration to call it a minor classic.

I believe that spiritual growth, under the right conditions, is as natural as breathing. And the conditions of our world are the perfect conditions for spiritual growth.

The person you are right now, with all of your challenges and strengths, pain and joys, failures and victories, is the perfect person for the journey ahead.

My intention for this post is to share with you why I believe that existence is an unending emergence of pure love. In fact, it’s a perfect and continuous homecoming, in spite of and in a sense because of, all the tragedy, pain and the unnecessary suffering that so many of us endure.

Similarly, on the day of judgment everyone will be gathered with nothing of their worldly possessions. Race, wealth, and status will not matter on that day. It is only one’s nearness to God that will be of any avail. Hajj is almost like a rehearsal for the day of judgment. Leaving the home symbolizes death, the iḥrām symbolizes the shroud, the large ocean of people gathering in Mecca of people from all races and backgrounds symbolizes the resurrection and gathering on the day of judgment.

Ultimately, hajj is a life changing experience. It is a moment of repentance and forgiveness. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him stated: The reward for an accepted hajj is nothing but paradise (Bukhari).

Enlightenment is the "full comprehension of a situation". [web 1] The term is commonly used to denote the Age of Enlightenment , [note 1] but is also used in Western cultures in a religious context. It translates several Buddhist terms and concepts, most notably bodhi , [note 2] kensho and satori . Related terms from Asian religions are moksha (liberation) in Hinduism , Kevala Jnana in Jainism , and ushta in Zoroastrianism .

In Christianity, the word "enlightenment" is rarely used, except to refer to the Age of Enlightenment and its influence on Christianity. Roughly equivalent terms in Christianity may be illumination , kenosis , metanoia , revelation , salvation and conversion .

Perennialists and Universalists view enlightenment and mysticism as equivalent terms for religious or spiritual insight.
